A gruesome discovery was made this week at a decommissioned landfill in Happy Valley-Goose Bay: two bear carcasses, one of which was missing its head.

Blackflies and other insects were swarming around the carcasses of the bears, which appeared to be fully grown or close to it.

The head of the decapitated bear was nowhere to be found.

The animals were discovered in an old dump site that has not been used in about 30 years.

A Department of Justice spokesperson said fish and wildlife officers were tipped off on Thursday.

The officers are looking into the situation, but the spokesperson said they did not have any more information.

Shooting nuisance bears is allowed, but with a permit. The rules say the carcass has to be disposed of properly in a regulated landfill.
