Dale Kirby, the former New Democrat who joined the Liberal caucus earlier this year, has won a competition to represent the Grits in the next general election.
Kirby defeated challenger Shaun Lane to win the Liberal nomination in St. John's North.
Kirby won the seat for the NDP in the 2011 election, but quit the New Democratic caucus last fall with fellow MHA Christopher Mitchelmore in a dispute over Lorraine Michael's leadership.
Both men sat for several months as Independents, but joined the Liberal caucus in February.
"Thanks to everyone who came out to vote in the St. John’s North nomination today, especially to our volunteers. This win is yours," Kirby told supporters on Twitter on Monday night.
