A Cougar helicopter on its way to the Terra Nova FPSO on the Grand Banks had to return to base on Thursday.

The chopper was about 22 kilometres east of St. John's when a caution light came on for one of its engine.

The crew decided to turn around and return to St. John's.

The fault light went off on the helicopter's return trip.

A spokesperson for Cougar Helicopters says there were 12 passengers on board at the time.

The helicopter landed safely without incident.
