The deputy mayor of Carbonear is worried about the cost of a major upgrade to the town's wastewater system.

There are five sewage outfalls from the town into Conception Bay. And according to Ottawa, the town must start treating that sewage by 2020.

Ches Ash said the rough estimate for the upgrade is around $20 million.

He's worried that the town's share could impact other needs in the town.

"Upgrading the wastewater disposal must not erode our ability to address our ongoing infrastructure needs ... improving water and sewer, street resurfacing and upgrading, that sort of thing," Ash said.

Ash said the federal government will help cover some of the costs of the project, but he's not sure how the province plans to help.
