Corner Brook's 42nd annual Winter Carnival is underway.
The flag raising and lighting of the torch officially kicked things off on Friday evening.
Dave Elms, carnival mascot for 21 years, says the event is an important community gathering.
"It's just going to be a time for everybody to come together as a community — bring all the family out and really enjoy the opening of winter carnival," Elms said.
Monday is a municipal holiday in Corner Brook. For the winter carnival, it's family day in the park.
"I think it's very important because it's not only good for business … but I think the main thing is that it brings the community together."
There is a long list of events scheduled as a part of the winter carnival, including bobsled races, dancing, fireworks, and musical performances.
The carnival wraps up on Feb. 24.
