Corner Brook sets fire ban
Corner Brook has banned all open fires in the city as the hot and dry weather continues.
The ban by the Corner Brook Fire Department includes outdoor fires and unauthorized burning including campfires, brush burning and fireworks. Gas barbecues are excluded from the ban.
"When the forest fire index reaches high or extreme, and right now I think its extreme, you can't even use the store bought fire pits," said Deputy Fire Chief Bill Griffin. "As of right now, there is no flame allowed in the city of Corner Brook."
The ban is in place until further notice.
The Department of Natural Resources banned all open fires in and around forested areas across Newfoundland because of the weather. The forest fire index is at extreme levels in many areas of the province.
Terra Nova National Park has also temporarily cancelled a planned prescribed fire in the Spruce Pond area of the park because of "unfavourable weather and moisture conditions".
