A Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer who responded to a complaint of assault in downtown St. John's Sunday wound up getting struck himself, the force said.

The RNC said a man, 57, was taken into custody after a run-in with police on Water Street on Sunday afternoon.

The Constabulary was contacted around 3:50 p.m.

Apart from being charged with assault and multiple breaches of court orders, the suspect also faces charges of assaulting a police officer and with resisting arrest.

The RNC said the officer on duty did not require medical attention.

The suspect was taken to the lockup overnight for an appearance at provincial court on Monday.
