Firefighters made quick work of a fire Sunday night at a construction site in St. John's.

Crews were called just after 8 p.m. to Victoria Park Condominiums on Hamilton Avenue where smoke was spotted coming from the unfinished building.

Supt. Derek Chafe says when firefighters arrived on the scene they found a fire in the basement.

"The building is under construction, so the smoke from that small fire went right up through the building and exited out through some openings on the fourth floor," Chafe told CBC News.

"That fire was very quickly extinguished. It was contained just to that small fire."

Chafe says there was minor damage to construction materials and equipment.

No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
