Coast guard helps icebound carrier break free
A bulk carrier that was stuck in thick ice off Newfoundland's west coast has been escorted to open water.
The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax says the Lowlands Opal had been drifting toward Stephenville Monday, with a crew of 23 on board.
The centre dispatched a Cormorant helicopter, which monitored the 190-metre Belgian-flagged carrier.
Two icebreakers with the Canadian Coast Guard were able to guide the vessel to more open water.
All of the crew are safe.
