Church bell returned after being stolen, fenced
A heavy church bell is back in the hands of an Anglican church outside St. John's after someone stole it and then sold it for scrap.
The church has been building a tower to better showcase its bell, which was built in 1928 for a church on Bell Island in nearby Conception Bay.
Rev. Keith Sheppard said the bell was recovered after staff at a local scrap yard realized the bell they had acquired for $700 had actually been stolen.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was able to return the bell to the church on Monday evening, Sheppard said.
"We do now have it secured," he told CBC News Tuesday.
"It's in one our parishioners' garage."
