A 19-year-old man is facing child pornography charges after an eight-month investigation led to his arrest Friday in the Burin Peninsula community of Lawn.

He's facing nine charges in total, including possession of child pornography and making child pornography available.

His arrest has led police to issue a warning to parents about potential dangers of online activity.

In a press release issued Friday, the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of Newfoundland and Labrador (CFSEU-NL) child exploitation unit said parents are encouraged to be involved in what their child does on the internet.

"And remind young people to be aware of what photos they are sharing with friends," the release said.

"It is important that parents have this conversation with their children and to monitor their online relationships," said Insp. Derek Santosuosso.

Images shared on social media

The child exploitation unit conducted an investigation from Sept. 23, 2016 to May 21, 2017, after what appeared to be child pornography images uploaded and shared on several different social media platforms.

As part of that investigation, officers executed a search warrant at a home in Lawn Friday morning, and arrested the 19-year-old man.

He was scheduled to appear in the Grand Bank provincial court Friday.
