A Paradise man pleaded guilty Monday to charges of possessing and distributing child pornography.

Joseph Rice's case was heard in provincial court in St. John's.

Rice, 37, was arrested this summer, but the charges date back to February when he lived with his mother in Paradise.

His mother, Patricia Rice, died suddenly in July. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary had been treating her death as a homicide until last week, when the medical examiner's office's findings ruled out foul play. Police are not commenting on how Rice is believed to have died.

The Crown wants Joseph Rice to serve two years in jail, and have his named added to the national sex offender registry.
