A man is facing charges  for having false licence plates on his car after being pulled over by police in St. John's Saturday afternoon.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary stopped the car in the west end of the city shortly after 4 p.m.

Police said the driver, 33, had a suspended licence and owed more than $24,000 in fines.

The car was impounded and the driver was issued tickets for operating without a licence, without valid insurance, and false plates.

He was detained by police for a Sunday morning court appearance.
