Cecil Haire's Radio Noon camp-cooking camp

The CBC's Cecil Haire has agreed to part with some treasured family recipes to make camping cuisine easier for you.

Yes, you're going to want to make these recipes this weekend!

Cecil Haire and the Radio Noon crew are celebrating the unofficial start to the Newfoundland and Labrador camping season by broadcasting Friday's show from Pippy Park in St. John`s.

We all know a major part of the camping experience is the food — so Cecil has agreed to part with some treasured family camping recipes to make it easier for you.

Cec's easy-peasy pork

  • Pork chops or sirloin
  • Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
  • Equal amounts of soy sauce 
  • Garlic, to taste

Throw the grapefruit juice and the soy sauce in a Ziplock bag with your pork. Get the air out of the bag, and flip it a couple of times for a minimum of half an hour. Throw the pork on the grill.

Cecil says you can get more grapefruit juice by microwaving the fruit for 30 seconds.

Cec's easy pork ribs while camping

Boil pork ribs in Coca-Cola (not diet) for 45 minutes to an hour (Cec says this is perfect on a camp stove). Put the ribs on the grill with your favourite barbeque sauce for 15 to 20 minutes.

Crowd-pleasing toutons

Fry a pound of bacon in a pan.Take all the bacon out, cook your toutons in the bacon grease. 

Banana in a boat

Split open a banana but not all the way. In the split part, put mini marshmallows, chocolate chips and peanut butter. Fold up some tinfoil and put it in the fire for five minutes or so.

It all melts together, and you just eat it with a spoon.
