The provincial Liberal party has found its candidate for a future byelection to fill the Virginia Waters seat vacated last month by former Premier Kathy Dunderdale.
Businesswoman and former Liberal leadership hopeful Cathy Bennett was officially named the Liberal candidate when nominations closed on Saturday at noon. Bennett says she is extremely excited to receive the nomination.
"We're really thrilled to be part of what I think is going to be a red wave that is going to sweep across the province," Bennett said, while going door to door in the riding on Saturday.
Bennett said she brings with her a knowledge of business and community. She said school size, school safety and attainable housing will be important issues for her.
Bennett had run unsuccessfully for the Liberal leadership last November. She placed third to winner Dwight Ball in that race.
Following defeat Bennett said she would still run for a seat in Virginia Waters in the next election.
When Kathy Dunderdale resigned as premier in January, Bennett said Dunderdale should quickly resign her seat in the riding. Dunderdale vacated the seat at the end of February.
"My intentions to run in the district have always been clear," Bennett said.
Sheilagh O'Leary is the declared candidate for the New Democrats.
No candidate has yet been nominated for the Tories.
