A cat that was rescued in the summer after being shot in both eyes with a pellet gun on the Port au Port Peninsula has died.

Sona was rescued and brought to SCAPA — a non-profit animal shelter in Stephenville — in July.

The cat also had to have a mangled paw amputated.

Gwen Samms, manager of the shelter, said the cat was recently brought to the veterinary college in Prince Edward Island for a CT scan.

Samms said the scan showed that the cat had an inoperable tumour, which was likely caused by the injuries inflicted with the pellet gun.

The cat died after returning to Newfoundland with Samms.
