The only movie theatre in Carbonear was severely damaged Monday night by fire and then water used to douse it.

The fire broke out at Carbonear Cinemas, on Powell Drive, around 11:30 p.m.

"Upstairs was gutted. Massive water damage. Massive," said assistant fire chief Keith Thomas, who helped fight the fire.

"I'd say there's about three or five feet of water downstairs in the bottom part, where the stage is to."

Moviegoers had left the building about an hour earlier, after a screening of the film The Help.

Owner Keith Oates said it is too early to speculate on the future of the 32-year-old cinema.
