A busy intersection in downtown Corner Brook was closed Friday morning because of a single-vehicle crash.

Police said a driver smashed his car into a large tree at the intersection of Park Street and Central Street at 1:30 a.m.

The tree snapped in half on top of the Ford Fusion, and caused extensive damage to the vehicle.

A 24-year-old man from Thornhill, Ont. was charged with impaired driving and failing the breathalyzer.

He had minor injuries, and was taken to hospital but subsequently released.

He was released to appear in court on Nov. 26.
