Car break-ins taint Ellsworth's victory party

The victory party for newly-elected St. John's Deputy Mayor Ron Ellsworth was marred by a number of vehicle break-ins on Tuesday night.

Newly-elected St. John's Deputy Mayor Ron Ellsworth and his campaign team had much to celebrate on Tuesday night — but the victory party was tainted by vehicle break-ins in a nearby parking lot.

Supporters said a number of cars were broken into on the lot next to the Lion's Club Chalet on Bonaventure Avenue, where the Ellsworth party was taking place.

A laptop computer was among the items stolen.

Ellsworth said the break-ins are a reminder of a problem he's keen to tackle while on council.

"Obviously, we need to do some work here with the RNC and with the crime piece," he said.

"We need to work to make our community safe for all our children and our seniors, to make sure that we're safe in our neighbourhoods."
