Work has started to make repairs to a bridge where a school bus carrying 39 children collided with a car on Tuesday.

No injuries were reported in the accident, which happened on the Trans-Canada Highway near Port Blandford.

Terra Nova MHA Sandy Collins said the bridge is riddled with potholes, and has been made narrow by a build-up of snow.

He said the Department of Transportation is planning to make improvements.

"Yesterday, I received word from the department that maintenance was happening with the surface. They were doing some cold patches there, as well," he said.

"We're going to go out and clear the snow on sides and end of [the] bridge, which again is going to alleviate some of that problem with the narrowness."

According to Collins, the aging bridge is on a list to be replaced at some point.

However, he said the structure is still considered safe.
