A western Newfoundland man has been charged with multiple offences involving child pornography, as well as sexual assault against young girls.

Roderick Joseph Colson, 48, appeared in provincial court in Stephenville Friday on 21 different charges.

Colson lives in Black Duck Siding, a small community east of Stephenville.

He is accused of sexual assault involving three different girls who were under the age of 16. He is also charged with as many counts of invitation to sexual touching involving the same girls.

The offences are alleged to have happened between September 2000 and Nov. 2 this year.

RCMP also laid three charges of making child pornography, five charges of possessing child pornography and seven charges of distributing child pornography.

The RCMP investigation involved officers in Newfoundland and Labrador as well as staff with a child exploitation unit in Ottawa.

RCMP told CBC News that the investigation started when officers spotted something on the internet, and led to a search of a home on Tuesday.

A publication ban is in effect on anything that might identify the alleged victims in the case.
