The RCMP have made what they're calling a significant drug bust in St. John's.

Police said a drug team searched a home on Empire Avenue on Thursday and found almost five kilograms of cocaine and nearly 22 kilograms of marijuana. The drugs were seized with the assistance of a police dog.

One man — 27-year-old Stephen Parsley — was arrested in connection with the bust and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking in cocaine, and possession for the purpose of trafficking cannabis marijuana.

He appeared before a judge and was released on conditions and a promise to return to court on June 8.

"The RCMP likes to view this seizure in terms of the amount of drugs taken out of the hands of our youth, rather than monetary value," the force said in a statement.

"The community impact of a seizure of this magnitude is significant. Depending on the purity of the cocaine  which can only be determined by laboratory analysis  the amount could have been considerably more by the time it hit the streets."
