A 42-year-old man was set to make a court appearance on Sunday on a number of charges, including assault with a weapon, after an incident in the early morning hours.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to the report of an assault in Portugal Cove around 3 a.m.

The man is facing charges of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, RNC said.

He was held overnight at the lockup prior to a court appearance.

Meanwhile, a Long Pond man was charged with common assault after a complaint was taken from a female about an incident earlier Sunday.

Police said the accused, 23, was released from custody.

He will make a court appearance at a later date.
