Police working in several communities in Newfoundland's Conception Bay are trying to determine whether a serial arsonist is responsible for a series of fires that have destroyed homes and other structures.
RCMP are not saying that the 15 fires are the result of arson, but police have a strong hunch that the unsolved fires may be connected.
Each of them — including two just this Tuesday, in Conception Harbour and in nearby Harbour Main — has been classified as suspicious.
"When we say suspicious, it’s undetermined. We can't determine the cause so we can't say what the cause of it was," said Cpl. Trevor O'Keefe.
The fires have occurred over time along Route 60, which hugs Conception Bay in communities that include Avondale and Holyrood.
Residents say that the boldness of the fires has escalated over the last year, with one set directly across from the Avondale fire station.
Around Christmas, a two-apartment structure on the main road was targeted. The two fires on Tuesday occurred within hours of each other.
O'Keefe said police are eager to hear from people who may have seen anything in the areas where Tuesday's fires were set, including a man seen on an ATV who may have observed something connected with the Harbour Main fire.
