An Alberta man has been charged with drug trafficking after the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary seized marijuana from his car Monday during a traffic stop outside St. John's.

Jessie Neufield, 33, of Spruce Grove, Alta., appeared in a St. John's court Wednesday on a charge of drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.

He was arrested Monday after police seized 29 kilograms of marijuana from his car during a traffic stop at the intersection of Trail's End Drive and Topsail Road in Paradise, just west of St. John's.

Neufield is scheduled to appear in court Friday for a bail hearing

The seized drugs have an estimated street value of about $580,000, police said.

They said the arrest was the result of weeks of investigating.

Police obtained a search warrant after the traffic bust to enter Neufield's hotel room in the St. John's area, where, they allege, they seized $150,000 in cash as well as drug paraphernalia.
