Police in the St. John's area are looking for a driver who is believed to have fled from an abandoned car on foot rather than go through a traffic checkpoint.

Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers were stopping vehicles on Pitts Memorial Drive around midnight.

During the process, an officer noticed that a car had been parked on the side of the road about a kilometre away from the checkpoint.

The RNC suspected that the driver fled from the scene on foot. Officers searched the area with a dog, but could not find anyone.

Meanwhile, the RNC stopped 300 vehicles during the checkpoint and impounded three of them.

Officers also charged several drivers for traffic offences.
