Four men had to swim to shore Saturday after their boat overturned in a pond on the Burin Peninsula.

The Burin RCMP said the men were travelling to a cabin in the Deer Pond Park area, north of Bay L'Argent, when their boat was swamped and they ended up in the water.

All four men were wearing flotation devices and were able to swim to shore.

Two of the men walked until they found a cabin and were able to contact police. The other two built a fire along the shore.

The police, along with the English Harbour East and the St. Bernard's-Jacques Fontaine Volunteer Fire Department and the Burin Peninsula ground search and rescue team helped the men.

Two of the men required brief observation in hospital before being released.

Police say the 12 foot aluminum boat overturned because of water and wind conditions and because it was overloaded.
