Two people are dead following a collision between a small car and a provincial government snow plow on the Northern Peninsula.

The collision happened at about 2:30 p.m., about a kilometre north of the intersection of Route 430 and the Cormack access road.

RCMP said the car was travelling south, and the Transportation and Works snow plow was travelling north.

The two victims were the only occupants of the car. The snow plow driver was not injured.

Snow was falling and the pavement was slippery at the time of the collision.

The accident closed the highway for more than two hours.

Route 430, also known as the Viking Trail, reopened to one lane of traffic shortly before 5 p.m.

Police said drivers could continue to expect delays while the investigation continues.
