The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating what they have called "an unusual collision" that took place around 10 p.m. Saturday in St. John's.

A vehicle stopped at the traffic lights at Brookfield and Topsail Roads was struck by a second vehicle, which was making a right turn from Topsail Road.

The driver of the vehicle at the time of the collision was an 18-year-old woman.

Her passenger, a 23-year-old man, took control of the vehicle and rammed the complainant's car a second time before the pair fled on foot.

Within minutes, they were apprehended by the RNC, and face charges for numerous offences.

The woman was charged with impaired driving, failure to remain at the scene of an accident and failing the breathalyzer.

The man has been charged with impaired driving, refusal to provide a breath sample, obstruction, resisting arrest, failing to remain at the scene, assaulting a peace officer and three breaches of court orders.

He was held for a court appearance on Sunday morning.

The driver is scheduled to make a court appearance at a later date.

There were no injuries as a result of the collision, but police said damage sustained to the vehicles was moderate.
