The operator of the Hibernia oil project has made a significant donation to bolster the geophysics program at Memorial University.

On Friday, the company announced $1.98-million to create an education and research fund for the Department of Earth Sciences.

The new fund will help provide new facilities and specialized equipment for geoscience studies and enhance geophysics education and research.

Earlier this year, Hibernia donated an additional $420,000 in funding to support the university's development of a new environmental geology and geophysics field school.
