Two people escaped a car moments before a train hit the vehicle in Moncton Friday afternoon.

The VIA Rail train was travelling from Halifax during heavy snow.

It hit the car at St George Street near Church Street around 5 p.m.

Dennis Dollemont, platoon chief for the Moncton Fire Department, said the pair managed to get out of the car before the train hit the back of it.

He didn't know how many passengers were on the train, but no one was injured. Emergency officials are on the scene.
