The RCMP say an act of mischief could have turned deadly in Tracadie–Sheila on Monday night.
Four people were in a vehicle travelling north on Route 11 about 10 p.m. when a metal object smashed through the windshield.
The object was a piece of fire hydrant that was thrown off of the Chemin Dignard overpass, RCMP Cpl. Scott Myles stated in a news release.
The driver managed to keep control of the vehicle, which sustained extensive damage.
The passengers — including two children —were uninjured.
"This kind of mischief could have caused serious injuries or even a loss of life," Myles said.
The police believe this incident is connected to acts of vandalism in the Tracadie-Sheila Industrial Park earlier that evening.
Four fire hydrants were tampered with, leading to a significant loss of water in the community’s water system, Myles said.
The RCMP are asking anyone with information about the incidents to call Crime Stoppers.
