A 19-year-old man from the Tracadie-Sheila area has been sentenced to two months in jail for dropping a piece of a fire hydrant from an overpass onto a vehicle.
Miguel McGraw, of Rivière-à-la-Truite, pleaded guilty to two charges of mischief endangering life, and one count of mischief under $5,000.
Four people — including two children — were in a vehicle travelling northbound on Route 11 on April 9 at about 10 p.m. when the chunk of metal thrown from the overpass on Dignard Road crashed through the windshield.
No one was injured, but the vehicle sustained extensive damage, RCMP have said.
The piece of metal was from a fire hydrant in the Tracadie-Sheila Industrial Park — one of four that had been tampered with earlier that evening, Const. Annick LaFleur stated in a release.
McGraw was also sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to reimburse the Town of Tracadie-Sheila $2,755.55.
Two vehicles and some fire hydrants were damaged, police said.
The community water supply system also lost a massive amount of water when the hydrants were damaged, officials said.
A 17-year-old male from Tracadie-Sheila, who is also facing charges in connection with the incidents, is scheduled to go to trial on June 27.
