A small New Brunswick community is in mourning after two people were killed in a two-car crash on the TransCanada Highway near Salisbury Thursday night.

Rachel Gauvin, 69, was driving on the wrong side of the divided highway at 8:20 p.m. when she collided with a vehicle carrying a family of four heading westbound, said RCMP Cpl. Chantal Farrah in a news release.

Chad Thorne, a 24-year-old father from Havelock, died at the scene. Heidi Thorne, 25, and her two children — Landon, 3, and Rowan, 4, — were taken to hospital.

Rowan sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the IWK Hospital in Halifax where he remains. Thorne and her son have both been released from hospital.

Gauvin from Grande-Digue was travelling alone in her vehicle at the time of the crash. She also died at the scene.

Residents in the area say people have been known to drive in the wrong direction on that stretch of highway.

Shannon Kierstead said better signage or lights could help.

"Better lines up there, some lights, some four-way flashers, something to guide people — especially tourists that aren't from here — [when they're crossing] over the overpass before they head into Moncton," she said.

Police said there is already signage in place to tell drivers they are going the wrong way.

RCMP said they are still trying to figure out where Gauvin entered the highway.

RCMP said five minutes before the crash happened, they received a call from witnesses saying they saw a car driving in the wrong direction on Route 2 in the Salisbury-Petitcodiac area.

Police said they are still trying to confirm whether the car Gauvin was driving was the same car.

Police confirm all those involved are from New Brunswick.
