Victoria-Tobique MLA Wes McLean was charged with impaired driving in Edmundston last Saturday. (CBC)Victoria-Tobique Progressive Conservative MLA Wes McLean has been stripped of his legislative duties after being charged with impaired driving.
The 31-year-old MLA was pulled over last Saturday in Edmundston.
Premier David Alward issued a statement on Friday, indicating McLean expressed his “deep regret” for his “serious breach of trust and error in judgment.”
“I take this very seriously and have asked Mr. McLean to step aside from his legislature duties including his role as deputy house leader and legislative secretary to the premier. He will no longer represent the government on legislative committees,” Alward said in a statement.
“We offer him our support as he goes through the process of repairing his relationship and trust with his community.”
The premier said society has a zero tolerance for impaired driving and how he was thankful no one was injured “by this irresponsible action.”
“We feel we must lead by example and it is appropriate to relieve Mr. McLean of his legislature duties representing our government,” Alward said.
