RCMP responded to about 26 crashes within two hours in southern New Brunswick on Wednesday morning due to the weather conditions.

A storm brought large amounts of rain, freezing rain and wind to the region, shutting down most schools.

No fatalities have been reported, but police are urging motorists to slow down on the slippery roads, Cpl. Chantal Farrah stated in a news release.

Drivers of high-sided vehicles who are planning evening travel in the Tantramar Marsh area near Sackville are also being advised to use caution with high winds in the forecast, she said.

Weather was a contributing factor in all of the accidents that occurred during the morning commute, between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., said Farrah.

Fredericton Police Const. Danielle Carmichael also warned drivers to be careful because roads were extremely slippery and were expected to get worse throughout the day.

The Oromocto Police have also reported several vehicle accidents because of road conditions.

Schools shut down

Schools across New Brunswick, except in the Saint John area, were closed in advance of the storm because of potential weather and driving conditions.

In the Anglophone South district, classes in Apohaqui, Sussex, Norton and Belleisle were cancelled but schools in the rest of the district remained open.

All schools in the Francophone districts were closed except for those in the Saint John and Quispamsis areas.

Environment Canada has weather warnings issued for eastern and western parts of the province.

Northwestern New Brunswick was told to prepare for between 25 to 45 millimetres of rain on Wednesday and Thursday. There is also a freezing rain warning for the Madawaska region.

Environment Canada is warning winds could be severe in southeastern New Brunswick.

"Strong south to southwest winds will also develop across New Brunswick tonight with southernmost regions likely experiencing gusts near 90 km/h, except in the Tantramar area where gusts to 110 km/h are expected beginning overnight tonight," according to a Environment Canada weather warning.
