Inquest to be held into Chinese student's death

Yifan (Jason) Wang died two days after being pulled from the pool unresponsive. (Courtesy of Brenan's Funeral Home)A coroner's inquest will be held this spring into the death of a Chinese student who died in hospital after nearly drowning at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre in Saint John in 2011.
The inquest will begin on April 8 in Saint John, the Department of Public Safety announced on Friday. Four days have been set aside.
Yifan (Jason) Wang had just moved to Saint John as an international student when he went to the centre’s pool with some friends on Sept. 18 for the public swim.
It’s still unclear what happened, but the 17-year-old was pulled from the pool unresponsive and died two days later in the intensive care unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital from injuries he sustained.
Gregory Forestell, the province's chief coroner, and a jury will publicly hear evidence from witnesses to determine the facts surrounding Wang's death.
The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances, a government release states.
