A 55-year-old New Brunswick man has been sentenced to six years in prison for breaking into a home in Plaster Rock and attempting to sexually assault an elderly woman.
Derrick Goodine, of Oxbow, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering the northwestern New Brunswick home in October 2011 with the intent to commit a sexual offence, said RCMP Sgt. Pierre Dufresne.
The woman was not injured, he said.
"There was no violence," said Dufresne. Goodine left when the woman spoke to him, the officer said.
Still, it was a "very serious incident," said Dufresne.
"We knew there was a very serious offender out there and took extra steps to do everything possible to … remove the perpetrator off the street," he said.
After months of investigation, DNA results from saliva found at the scene pointed officers to Goodine, said Dufresne.
Goodine had also been charged with sexual assault, but that charge was withdrawn.
Goodine is also prohibited from owning a firearm for life, must provide a DNA sample, and must register with the National Sex Offender Registry.
