A city truck fell through the ice while scraping the snow off of Mapleton Park pond in Moncton on Friday morning.

Rod Higgins, the general manager of parks and leisure services, said the employee, who was driving the truck, was able to escape from the truck and is now fine.

“The truck is sitting in about one metre of water. Mechanical staff are on site and the truck will be pulled out shortly,” Higgins said.

Ice on the pond had been measured and was considered thick enough for the truck to drive on the surface.

The city’s news release said the truck “must have hit some soft ice or an underground spring.”

Public skating at the Mapleton Park pond has been cancelled because of the accident.
