A male skier was killed Tuesday in a collision with another skier at Crabbe Mountain, near Fredericton, say RCMP.
The collision between the victim, who was in his 60s, and a teenaged girl, occurred at the bottom of one of the runs at about 11 a.m., said Cpl. Chantal Farrah.
"One skier died from his injuries at the scene and the other skier was taken to the hospital in Fredericton with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries," she said.
No other information about the victim has been released.
Both skiers were wearing helmets, according to the president of Crabbe Mountain, Leslie Wilson, who is based in Wentworth, N.S., but was on the scene Tuesday afternoon.
Police were called to Crabbe Mountain at about 11 a.m. (Facebook)"Right now, we don't know exactly what the injuries were," Wilson told CBC News. An autopsy will be conducted, she said.
"We're still piecing things together," said Wilson.
But the collision occurred "on a fairly flat section," she said.
Ski patrol, police and paramedics responded to the incident.
Wilson says in the 10 years she has worked for the family-owned business, this is the first fatality, as far as she knows.
"This is just a real sad day for us and we just want to reach out to the family, that we all here, the Crabbe Mountain family, are thinking about them. And to be here as well to support the staff, we're all feeling it right now," she said.
Since there's no criminal aspect to the incident, the case has been turned over to WorkSafe NB and the coroner's office, police said.
Two runs — Dave's Dream and Greg's Way — were closed for a couple of hours after the incident, according to postings on the ski hill's Facebook site.
