Edmundston nursing home construction to begin

Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé says the new nursing home will cost about $48.5 million and provide 180 beds. (CBC)Construction of a replacement nursing home in the Edmundston area is slated to begin at the end of the month, the provincial government announced on Monday.
Les Résidences Jodin is expected to be completed in the fall of 2014, Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé stated in a release.
The estimated $48.5-million facility will replace Foyer Saint-Joseph de Saint-Basile and Villa Des Jardins, she said.
"Before long, the residents and staff will have a new, secure facility that will enhance their quality of life in the community they call home," Dubé said.
The new nursing home will provide 180 beds, 24 more than its predecessors, she said.
"By continuing to improve the province's nursing home infrastructure, we will help ensure our seniors receive the quality care and support they need close to home, family and friends," said Dubé.
The tender to build has been awarded to Springhill Construction Ltd., of Fredericton.
Les Résidences Jodin is part of the provincial government's 2011-16 nursing home renovation and replacement plan, under which 354 nursing home beds and 704 specialized care beds are being opened.
The nursing home infrastructure plan will cost $329 million, officials have said.
A previous plan announced by the former Liberal government would have created 700 new nursing home spots at a cost of $439 million.
