A northwestern New Brunswick man lost his home in a fire on Wednesday morning near Edmundston.

The Red Cross said the fire occurred just before 2 a.m. in St.-Joseph-de-Madawaska at a home on Roussel Martin Road.

The man, who is in his 20s, made it out of the house safely. But he was left with only the clothes he was wearing at the time.

Several dogs also escaped from the early morning fire.

The Red Cross said it is helping the man with emergency purchases of clothes and personal care items.

The homeowner told the relief agency he has home insurance and the fire appeared to start in a wall behind a wood stove.

But investigators have yet to determine an official cause of the fire.
