Police have identified a woman whose body was discovered in a ditch north of Fredericton this week, saying she was about seven months pregnant and 26 years old.

The body of Alicia Dawn Boone, who was originally from Nackawic, N.B., was discovered on the side of Killarney Road on Tuesday afternoon.

The cause of death has still not been determined, but it is considered suspicious, police say.

"Nothing has been ruled out," Cpl. Chantal Farrah told reporters.

Asked whether people who live in the area have any reason to fear, Farrah said: "At this time, we don't know how Alicia Boone died. It's not safe to speculate.

"I think everyone needs to feel for her family, feel for her, and we need to exactly determine what the circumstances were surrounding her death. And that's what we're doing."

The RCMP’s major crime unit is investigating and has spoken to a number of people, said Farrah. An autopsy is being conducted.

Police have not said whether there were any visible signs of trauma or how the victim was clothed.

It's unclear how long Boone's body had been there, but she had spoken to her family on Monday, said Farrah.

Boone's family filed a missing persons report with the Fredericton police on Wednesday, which led to her identification, Farrah said.

She was discovered by a passerby shortly before 1:30 p.m.

Pam Henderson Goguen had gone to collect her mail when she found Boone's body in the ditch behind the community mailboxes.

Goguen immediately called 911, then unsuccessfully tried to flag down passing motorists.

Farrah could not say whether Boone was living in that area.
