Many apple orchard u-picks across the province are struggling due to the rainy weather.

Don Bostwick, who runs Bostwick's U-Pick Apples on the Kingston Peninsula, says his sales are the lowest he’s seen in 30 years.

“Most people want to come out when the weather is fine, and make a picnic out of it - bring hot chocolate and kids get their pumpkins and gourds — and it's enjoyable for the whole family,” he said.

“Last weekend, the rain was coming down in sheets and it's not much fun. We do get a few stragglers, but not when it's pouring rain.”

Bostwick said it's a shame because his crop has never been better, thanks to the hot, dry summer.

“To have such a nice crop, my expectations were high and now, they're near shattered,” he said.

“If we don’t get this crop picked in the next two-to-three weeks, it's really going to hurt my bottom line.

“I don't think we're even at the halfway mark as far as financially achieving what we need. It's devastating for us.”

Other apple operations, including some in Gagetown, have said they're about two weeks behind.

Still, Bostwick is hopeful there is time to catch up if the weather improves.
