Accused in Rockwood Park jogger attack sent for assessment

(Matthew Bingley/CBC)A Saint John man facing assault-related charges in connection with a female jogger being attacked by an armed, masked man at Rockwood Park earlier this month, has been sent for a 30-day psychiatric assessment.
The 27-year-old man, who appeared in provincial court on Tuesday, is also charged with sexual assault in connection with an incident dating back to last summer.
He has not entered any pleas.
The man has been ordered to go to the Restigouche Hospital Centre to determine if he was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the most recent attack.
On Oct. 3, shortly before 7 p.m., a 26-year-old woman was jogging on a trail around Lily Lake when a man, who had a pair of nylon pantyhose over his head and was holding a knife, jumped out of the woods, police have said.
The woman managed to escape uninjured and call for help.
A suspect was arrested trying to leave the park in a vehicle a short time later, police have said.
The accused is charged with assault, sexual assault with a knife, and wearing a mask while committing an offence.
He is also charged with sexual assault in connection with an incident on Aug. 26, 2011.
The man is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 13 at 1:30 p.m. for a fitness hearing.
