Two Miramichi firefighters sustained minor injuries battling several fires at the Arbec Mill on Water Street Monday night.

But Chief Ian Gavet believes damage to the mill was limited to conveyor belts, and operations are expected to resume as early as Thursday.

Twenty firefighters were called to the mill at about 7:30 p.m., said Gavet.

Hot embers from wood processing were transported throughout the facility on conveyor belts before the fire was detected and before fire suppression operations could begin, he said.

When the problem was detected, there were fires in several different parts of the mill.

Gavet said employees at the mill provided expert advice to firefighters, and assisted crews to put out the fires. The last hopper was back in service at about 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Some issues with the facility's water supply arose, but were overcome by fire crews.

Two firefighters did receive minor injuries but none required treatment at the scene.
