Provincial riding boundary panel plans 13-community tour

New Brunswick's riding redistribution commission is planning a 13-community tour in October to seek input on how it should carve out the province’s 49 new ridings.
Annise Hebert-Hollies, a former chief electoral officer, and Allan Maher, a former Liberal finance minister, have been asked by Premier David Alward to lead the Electoral Boundaries and Representation Commission.
The commission will redesign the province's riding boundaries that will be in place for the 2014 provincial election.
The new riding map must take into account the province’s shifting demographics and the need to eliminate six ridings.
“The commission is building a new electoral map for New Brunswick for the next decade and beyond,” said Hebert-Hollies in a statement.
“It is important to hear from people in the different communities that have been affected by the population shift in the province.”
A federal riding redistribution panel is also touring New Brunswick, asking for feedback on its proposed riding map. It has drawn significant criticism for its initial plans.
The commission will be holding public events on:
- Moncton: Oct. 1
- Sackville: Oct. 2
- Saint Andrews: Oct. 9
- Saint John: Oct. 9
- Bouctouche: Oct. 19
- Miramichi: Oct. 19
- Caraquet: Oct. 21
- Bathurst: Oct. 24
- Dalhousie: Oct. 24
- Edmundston: Oct. 25
- Grand Falls: Oct. 25
- Woodstock: Oct. 30
- Fredericton: Nov. 1
