Human remains discovered south of Campbellton earlier this month have been identified as those of a woman who had been missing for eight years.

Gladys Simon, of Elsipogtog First Nation, was a patient at the Restigouche Hospital and failed to return from her daily walk on June 24, 2004, RCMP Sgt. Stephen Dibblee stated in a news release.

A search of the area was conducted at the time, but failed to locate Simon, Dibblee said.

On Sept. 10, a man was walking along the shoreline of New Dam Lake in Sugarloaf Park, looking for fossils, when he found human bones and called police.

Investigators believe that during her walk, Simon wandered into the nearby woods of Sugarloaf Park and may have become disoriented and unable to find her way back to the hospital, said Dibblee.

Foul play is not suspected, he said.
