Leo Hayes High School is reviewing safety measures for extra-curricular sporting events after hundreds of fans spilled onto the field during the closing moments of a football game on Friday.
The visiting Oromocto Blues were leading the Leo Hayes Lions by three points with a few seconds left in the game.
The Oromocto quarterback took the snap but was hit just after time on the clock expired.
A member of the Leo Hayes team picked up the football and ran it into the end zone.
Rob Wilson, the coach of the Oromocto, said that's when he saw fans start to rush onto the field.
"We retreated with our players back to a portion of the field, and waited for Fredericton City Police to arrive, to ensure the safety of players at the time,” he said.
The incident didn't last long, however.
Brent True, the Leo Hayes coach, said there were hundreds of fans attending the Friday night football game.
He said he’s not sure how many fans ran onto the field after the game. But he said the situation was just a misunderstanding about who had won the game.
"I don't think it was a question of being unruly, it was just people excited, coming on the field, thinking that the game was over,” he said.
True said the school will take steps in the future, such as installing barriers, to prevent people from getting on the field.
Leo Hayes plays on the Scotiabank North field, which is next to the city-owned Willie O'Ree Place.
