A Moncton non-profit group has planned a mini music festival for this weekend, hoping to build on the city's reputation as a concert capital.

Organizers of Music Central call the upcoming event, Fall of Rock, the first step toward a longer music festival similar to Fredericton's Harvest Jazz and Blues.

Mega-concerts have been great for Moncton, but there is a gap a new festival could fill, said board member Brock Gallant.

"The true festival atmosphere that's been missing from these events. Oftentimes they're one day, three to four acts at a large venue. And this event is trying to bring something that has a larger reach throughout the community and brings that atmosphere like we saw last year during the East Coast Music Awards," said Gallant.

The new festival hopes to eventually bring in international acts as headliners and include local and regional talent, said Gallant.

"It's a way to build the resumes of local musicians," he added.

Fall of Rock begins Friday.
